Tatiana O’Hara is a team operations coach. She dove into the world of corporate leadership straight out of college as a district manager for teams of over 65 upper management professionals, as well as managing monthly budgets totaling upwards of $5 million. Tatiana has always had a passion for entrepreneurship even throughout her corporate experience, so after four years of working for a boss, she created her own consultancy. Today, she helps “CEOs become the delegator, not the doer” and structures teams for success by bolstering their culture and branding.

 

Tatiana unloads a treasure trove of tips and best practices around establishing KPIs for your team. She differentiates between operational KPIs, which are unique to the different roles your business has; and behavioral KPIs, which apply to their entire team. She favors a minimalist approach towards these important metrics, recommending no more than five separate operational KPIs per specific role, and likewise no more than five separate behavioral KPIs for the team as a whole. Finally, Tatiana recommends creating a simple scale—say a 1-to-5 rating system—for evaluating each individual KPI. Once these KPIs have been established across your team, expect optimal performance for your company.

 

Contrary to most mainstream advice, Tatiana says that a company’s financial status should be the last element to be considered when deciding to create potential new roles. Hiring is an investment. Time should be the top factor for hiring. Hire for tasks that are not income-generating. In scaling your business, says Tatiana, “if you want to make more, you have to do less.” CEOs should break down their day and measure their productivity via percentages. If 70% of your activities are not income-generating, hire out so that you are able to put more time into growing your business.

 

Whether speaking about hiring or any other business activity, Tatiana assures us that “any decision that you make in your business is not necessarily a bad decision. Every decision helps you get closer and closer to where you are supposed to be.”
